It really should only have back and forth courses through the safest possible spots within Federation space and reported every jump data to a research starbase in an equally safe space.Click here for the full & detailed guidelinesġ. It's still tremendously bad war indsutry practice to have your only research center on the key to winning the war have frequent encounter with the enemy. I'm thinking the Discovery won't make it back from wherever it was sent, at least not in one piece.īut does that mean there are no other records of the research in starfleet ? I could assume the top secret nature of the project justifies that the Discovery never takes breaks to report back to a Starfleet base to share progress with an industrial team charged with designing a line of ships using the spore drive. field ? and it seems to be pretty new tech so it would make sense that later versions don't haver those imperfections, meaning it's not just a means of updating the countermeasure but of figuring out an entirely new one.Īnd as for the spore drive technology. Yeah, they say the method relies on imperfections of the cloaking. The interiors of that sarcophagus ship are the most '80s glam thing ST has ever done, but like most cultures Klingons are weird about death. I have no problem with the Klingon designs, though, because the changing appearance of Klingons is canon and has been explained - at least to some degree - and allowing for a range of appearance within a species. Best to have some mechanical interfaces, at least as back-up.Īctually, for the first few episodes the visual style of the show made it hard for me to "read" Discovery as Star Trek, because between the designs, lighting, camera work, lens flares, and effects, it doesn't look like any other ST show. Smart phones are sleeker and have fewer outward features than an old flip phone, but smart phones are more advanced. that plus the fact that how people like to interact with their technology can change, especially when you get away from pure engineering and structural necessities. "Art thrives on restrictions" and all that. I don't see that as slavish or unimaginative, and it arguably requires more creativity - or I maybe just a different aspect or application of creativity - that doing your own thing. I'm not saying anyone should do that, or that Discovery should have, I just don't think they're incompatible - far from it. I stand between! And on both sides! I love the design work that's gone into this show, but I love the era- and budget-influenced simplicity of TOS, and I think it would be amazing to see some designer(s) come along and make those ols designs work for the modern eye.
